Lampwork Demonstration by Toby Upton.
Friday, May 19th, 2006, 7-9PM.
Toby Upton brings his torch to Biddle Gallery and turns rods of glass into magnificent little insects.
A graduate of College of Creative Studies in Detroit, Toby Upton has been honing his glassworking skills for a decade. His impetus to craft bugs came when a glass bead he was crafting accidentally took the shape of a grub. Pleased with the dichotomy that a normally repulsive insect became beautiful in glass, Upton went on to create more elaborate insects. With painstaking detail, Upton has honed his glass lampworking skills to create a vast array of bugs so realistic in detail, that even entomologists are impressed. He has since crafted ladybugs, katydids, beetle, dragonflies, praying mantis, and dozens of other insects both common and rare.
His inspiration comes from National Geographic, Entomology Texts, and his travels throughout Asia.
Can't make it to the demonstration? Toby's work is always on view and available for sale at Biddle Gallery.
