Lampwork Demonstration by Toby Upton.
Friday, May 19th, 2006, 7-9PM.
Toby Upton brings his torch to Biddle Gallery and turns rods of glass into magnificent little insects.

A graduate of College of Creative Studies in Detroit, Toby Upton has been honing his glassworking skills for a decade. His impetus to craft bugs came when a glass bead he was crafting accidentally took the shape of a grub. Pleased with the dichotomy that a normally repulsive insect became beautiful in glass, Upton went on to create more elaborate insects. With painstaking detail, Upton has honed his glass lampworking skills to create a vast array of bugs so realistic in detail, that even entomologists are impressed. He has since crafted ladybugs, katydids, beetle, dragonflies, praying mantis, and dozens of other insects both common and rare.

His inspiration comes from National Geographic, Entomology Texts, and his travels throughout Asia.

Can't make it to the demonstration? Toby's work is always on view and available for sale at Biddle Gallery.

Michael Goss: PortraitsApril 21-June 3, 2006
Artist Reception, Friday, April 21, 2006, 6:00-9:00PM

Michael Goss' work utilizes simplicity and subtlety to convey unorthodox emotions, images and ideas. The work is inspired by various styles of illustration, the creativity of young children, and the derivation of everyday life. Michael is pursuing further education and continues his creative endeavors.
Artist Statement:When I make art, I am often fully realizing the visual form of an incredibly simple idea. The maturation of my work is typically not a long process. It is important that when I have an idea, I begin shaping it immediately or the essence is lost. It is not my intention to tell a story with my work, I am more intrigued by expressing a single thought in a single period of time. Although over a decade, the reoccurring images and ideas in my work have begun to create a narrative. In 1997 I painted a portrait entitled 'Frustration' which would be the beginning of my folkloric narrative. From that point on I concentrated on illustrations and paintings that introduced an often comic book style cast of characters. The focus of most of this work has been on the human face, and all of the subtle variations that can so precisely portray the diverse array of emotions I wish to create.I have chosen to show my most current body of 'portraits' which I began after revisiting the same feelings and ideas I found years ago. 'Frustration' will be included in this collection, which has never before been shown in public.

This work may best represent the creative world which my ideas reside in, and also display the maturation of my work over a long, turbulent periodof my life.I am incredibly thrilled and honored to show this collection
