The 'dAP presents its most progressive exhibit to date with graffiti art by Brown Bag Detoit at Energie Coffeehouse through July....
Brown Bag Detroit is not about painting overpasses or illegally adorning buildings with their creations. On canvas and found objects this creative duo, Rick Butynski and Jordan Roxwell, mastermind with paint markers, acrylic, house paint and of course spray paint fantastic wall art that still celebrates the rebellious artform of graffiti.
Rick Butynski's resume includes clients such as Coca Cola, Sirius Satellite Radio and the hip hop magazine- XXL and events such as the 2007 Fringe Festival and the Hip Hop Olympics sponsored by Red Bull. Butynski doesn't stop there he refines his craft enough to present it on canvas in the walls of such galleries as C-Pop, Detroit Contemporary and Johanson Charles Gallery. His urban expressionistic murals and wall art has pushed him to the forefront of the contemporary urban art scene.
Jordan Roxwell discovered his first inspiration in the flourishing Midwest 90's graffiti scene, where he was quickly considered to be one of Detroit's graffiti innovators. After spawning countless styles and techniques, Roxwell has turned his tastes to mixed media endeavors. Constantly merging mediums, he is inspired by varied combinations of caffeine and nicotine, no two works are ever the same. He brings the temp while trying to keep his art above par and manages to succeed every time.
This event is produced by the 'dAP, the 'dotte Arts Project. The 'dAP's goal is make Wyandotte and all of Downriver the venue for progressive and emerging art. With galleries and art friendly spaces like Energie Coffee and Smoothie Bar, River's Edge Gallery, Biddle Gallery and Modern Exchange Downriver is an extremely art forward area in Metro Detroit. The 'dAP is presenting an emerging and progressive arts, music and performing arts area at the Wyandotte Street Art Fair and it includes a graffiti wall painted by Brown Bag Detroit.
Butynski and Roxwell are painting the wall located on the corner of Sycamore and Biddle throughout the four days of the fair. They will be doing a collection during the show at Energie Coffee and Smoothie Bar to pay for the paint for the graffiti wall. Come to Energie Coffeehouse Friday June 22nd to meet, greet and donate to one of the most progressive events the city of Wyandotte has ever seen.

CONTACT: WWW.ENERGIE.CC OR 734-246-7600
Symbol Of... a show of emerging artists opens January 26th 6pm-9pm at Energie Coffee Bar.
Energie Coffee Bar in Wyandotte is the new show space in the Downriver area for emerging artists from all over the metro Detroit area.
Jeremy Hansen, Design Director of the River's Edge Gallery, curates the shows. While working at the River's Edge Gallery in Wyandotte Hansen noticed many new talented artists would inquire about a place to show their work. "Most emerging artists don't have a space to have their first shows," Hansen says, "which every aspiring professional artist needs in order to build their resume."
Hansen's main goal with these shows is to create a more art friendly atmosphere in Downriver Michigan one art show at a time. Hansen, also an emerging artist, is fortunate to work in an atmosphere that helps him to learn what is necessary to become a professional artist.
Hansen says, "I look at the shows that I curate as a low cost way to build an artists resume and art show experience so they are ready to show at an art gallery."
Symbol Of... is the fifth show at Energie for Hansen which features the work of Cherie Shown, Niko Vardas, and Seefdro Tvneik.
Cherie Shown has been consistently creating artwork for over 6 years. Her figurative paintings on canvas go from abstraction to realism to surrealism and so much more. She paints what she wants and doesn't stay within a certain style.
Niko Vardas ,a Westland native , has been painting with a variety of matierials and media for over seven years now. Everything from oil, acrylic, pencil and crayon, to housepaint, oilsticks, and ink are used to make the colorful and strange subject matter of his work.
Seefro Tvneik says "My work is a celebration of color and composition. The process of my work starts with the calculated experiences of my life. I like to use emotion and translate it through the use of color and composition. The structures or compositions can at first seem ambiguous within my composition. Although this is far from the intention in my creativity. The work is layered, with each layer carefully scrutinized for optimum visual experience. The compositions are complete when the structure radiates an energy which is fulfilling to me. Usually the aesthetics process within my work has many layers and can take several months to a year to complete. My colors are rich with pigment to help intensify the visual experience. The work is described by me as having a rough ,beautiful, chaotic aesthetic which ultimately works brilliantly within the composition. The work ultimately reflects my visual window of humanity and the endeavors our emotions work with."
The opening for Symbol Of... is on January 26th from 6pm to 10pm.

3024 Biddle Ave. Wyandotte (734)246-9880 or riversedgegallery@wyan.org
Opening January 19th 6pm-11pm
Dr. Arnold Dreifuss and Jim Slack were hard working "lifers" devoted to creating art.
Both of these highly collected artists died in the midst of a creative fury that left an uncomparable legacy of artwork.
Many considered their distinctive painting styles to be their extended finger prints. Their highly expressive work appears to have come from the same school of learning although they would truely be considered "outsider" artists, a very popular collectible art form where the artist does not derive his style from a formal education.
Sculptural Works and Oils on Canvas created on many unusual substraits have incorporated non-traditional and traditional techniques. Pieces often include more than one medium and multiple materials: printmaking, quilting, chicken wire and painted glass to name a few.
Although Dreifuss and Slack never met, they were kindred spirits.
ALSO:Nancy Byrum presents her new photo realism pieces on the first floor. Her paintings of various birds and animals have sold all over Michigan and have won numerous awards.
Patricia Izzo's dark and light side will come together in her studio and adjoining third floor gallery when two travelling displays called 20/20 come together. The 20/20 series has garnered critical acclaim in numerous metro-Detroit newspapers and weeklies.

In Her Own Words...Niagara
THE WORLD IS GOING CRAZY.
And "crazy" is second nature to the women in Niagara's
paintings. They have been known to be violent... they drink, smoke, sometimes indulge in opium or absinthe...
and sometimes "lunacy" for good or ill. They're well-rounded girls, obviously.
From Niagara
UNDERSTANDING LUNACY
a. Insanity interrupted by lucid intervals
b. Insanity amounting to lack of responsibility
in the eyes of the law
c. extravagant folly
FACES OF LUNACY
The women's faces in the paintings are up-front and personal. Their countenances are under-layered
with a coloured damask pattern. The antique pattern is intricate in controlled confusion...and symbolizes
the Past. The history/Past of a person influences the psychology of on-set Lunacy.
Multi-coloured dots, ovals or orbs curve & dance from their eyes or mind, in geometric patterns.
This "dot" pattern and the large wide-open eyes symbolize, poetically, the touch of madness dancing
about. They are also reminiscent of the Moon which is thought to effect one's mental moods,
especially the Full Moon. Studies
show more crazy activity around a Full Moon than any other.
The colours of the Lunacy-patterns are chosen to
"pop" & float against the background making the Idea of Lunacy obvious & visible.
The paintings are an extravagant face-scape painting with
the highest regard for colour & form.
This is the first anyone has seen of Niagara's Lunacy series. She has a To make these pieces "in your face" she decided to have the canvas which is painted as a continuation of the painting Now mounting the image on the frame to show the entire piece including the sides which are a continuation of the face of the canvas. The pieces look as though they are jumping out at the viewer.
Lunacy #1
Niagara's Lunacy series will continue to show at the River's Edge Gallery in Wyandotte until the end of November.
Store Hours: Mon- Thurs 10-7 Fri 10-8 Sat 10-5
