In Her Own Words...Niagara
THE WORLD IS GOING CRAZY.
And "crazy" is second nature to the women in Niagara's
paintings. They have been known to be violent... they drink, smoke, sometimes indulge in opium or absinthe...
and sometimes "lunacy" for good or ill. They're well-rounded girls, obviously.
From Niagara
UNDERSTANDING LUNACY
a. Insanity interrupted by lucid intervals
b. Insanity amounting to lack of responsibility
in the eyes of the law
c. extravagant folly

FACES OF LUNACY
The women's faces in the paintings are up-front and personal. Their countenances are under-layered
with a coloured damask pattern. The antique pattern is intricate in controlled confusion...and symbolizes
the Past. The history/Past of a person influences the psychology of on-set Lunacy.
Multi-coloured dots, ovals or orbs curve & dance from their eyes or mind, in geometric patterns.
This "dot" pattern and the large wide-open eyes symbolize, poetically, the touch of madness dancing
about. They are also reminiscent of the Moon which is thought to effect one's mental moods,
especially the Full Moon. Studies
show more crazy activity around a Full Moon than any other.
The colours of the Lunacy-patterns are chosen to
"pop" & float against the background making the Idea of Lunacy obvious & visible.
The paintings are an extravagant face-scape painting with
the highest regard for colour & form.
This is the first anyone has seen of Niagara's Lunacy series. She has a To make these pieces "in your face" she decided to have the canvas which is painted as a continuation of the painting Now mounting the image on the frame to show the entire piece including the sides which are a continuation of the face of the canvas. The pieces look as though they are jumping out at the viewer.

Lunacy #1

Niagara's Lunacy series will continue to show at the River's Edge Gallery in Wyandotte until the end of November.
Store Hours: Mon- Thurs 10-7 Fri 10-8 Sat 10-5

In her own words...IZZO

Sometimes the best person to explain their artwork is the artist themselves so we decided to give you the opportunity to hear from the artists about their work.

Here is our first installment: Patricia Izzo whose show 20/20 can now be viewed at River’s Edge Gallery in Wyandotte and Ariana Gallery in Royal Oak through November 31st. The featured works and more are available at these locations.

“My inspiration for the 20/20 exhibit was to give the viewer a very private voyeuristic glimpse into the very private lives of fellow human beings. You are allowed to look. At times it feels like you are looking at an accident and you stare, not able to turn away. Other images may make you blush as you feel the sensual pull of an undressed human body. Other images may give you pause as danger, anxiety, nightmares, or secrets flood your memory. Still, some images are small windows that you are allowed to peek through that give you peace and contentment such as a mothers bed where solace and safety are found. Collectively this exhibit was born to invite interpretation and introspection. To allow the viewer their own private moments and to be able to FEEL!

Who Are You to be Brilliant?

My images of the girls with mouths sewn shut are inspired by Nelson Mandela’s 1994 Inaugural address. They are not statements of subjugation of women but rather the subjugation of free speech and the freedom to create. Mandela urges us to let our light shine and not be diminished by the fear that we just might shine too brightly and actually be noticed! His words are echoed in my mind giving me the courage to take the necessary risks of being an artist.

We ask ourselves ‘who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ You are a child of God and as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. It is our light not our darkness that frightens us.

Nelson Mandela

Ransom

The image Ransom is bitter sweet. A young turk shackles himself with paper chains. As he wrestles with his demons in the dark dance of love and hate, he embraces his victim status. He knows all along he can easily break his shackles but he continues to hold himself hostage.

We all participate in this fear based existence at times; holding on to our addictions until we have the courage to dismiss them and open the next door.

THE FIGURE GROUND RELATIONSHIP
Synergy Fine Art Gallery will open its next installment entitled “The figure - ground relationship” on June 2, 2006. The show will feature the work of Detroit figurative artist Taurus burns and Hamtramck landscape artist Frank English.
Frank English reveals a powerful relationship to Michigan’s natural landscape through his hand made and found objects. English reverently salvages the neglected natural world through painted and recycled materials. English attempts to focus attention back to the natural world in the face of industrial and urban expansion. The traditional landscape within the decidedly modern compositions reveal the relentless natural world that envelops the inner-city landscapes long after it’s perceive usefulness has been expensed. The quiet paintings celebrate a haunting, almost melancholic perception of Michigan’s wilderness enveloped by industrial Detroit.
The show also exhibits the work of Taurus Burns. The figurative work is a psychological investigation of internal perceptions, relationships, and the influence of culture on individual identity. The work quietly attempts to eliminate perceived social dogmas. It is through his art that he attempts to confront, sort out and even reconstruct past events and influences. The images reflect a romanticized vision with an emphasis on atmosphere, individuality and emotion. The work engages the viewer through the diverse and dynamic compositions that he creates.
Exhibition 4 entitled The Figure - Ground Relationship”, will open June 2, 2006 for an artist reception beginning at 6:00pm and will run through July 15th. Gallery hours are 11am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday. For any Questions contact Andrew Drisko at:

FRANK ENGLISH
Artist Statement

For the last seven years I have been dedicated to the first hand experience of working out in the landscape. The time working indoors at the studio I will often improvise and also draw from the memory of that original experience. The necessity I feel is to balance out the cognitive ideations of contemporary art making with intuitive heart thread content. What forms and evolves is unique, insightful and inspirational.
This process involves creating paper from ground pulps. Pouring plaster into saved and found forms. Covering lots of ground in the car and on foot. Painting on abrupt and extreme surfaces. All the while getting lost and then found.
Talking with people and hearing stories and experiencing cultures. Witness to occurrences 3000 fold in the human and natural worlds. All of this provides fertile ground for personal / spiritual expansion or deepening or opening. The process I have discovered has much freedom and yet holds me accountable too some extant. The ritual of gathering when sincere yields good fruit while helping to tune up my sensibilities.
Many of the places I am drawn to end up radically changing soon after.
The extremes can sometimes be very dramatic or subtle. As a poetic document the works offer perspectives of their own and hopefully contain some of the energy and inspiration and story of the place.
Each work has stories and its own accumulation of experience and energy. The work is born and from that day continues to evolve and collect.Returning to that place of origin at various times of the year, many of the works have evolved with the place / experience. They eventually find resting points or a safe place to thrive for awhile until we go back, it finds another home or is burnt. Often people tell me they feel they have been at the location of the paintings.
If the works do tap the shared experience of people, the way music or other mediums can, I am excited and know the right things are happening.

Lampwork Demonstration by Toby Upton.
Friday, May 19th, 2006, 7-9PM.
Toby Upton brings his torch to Biddle Gallery and turns rods of glass into magnificent little insects.

A graduate of College of Creative Studies in Detroit, Toby Upton has been honing his glassworking skills for a decade. His impetus to craft bugs came when a glass bead he was crafting accidentally took the shape of a grub. Pleased with the dichotomy that a normally repulsive insect became beautiful in glass, Upton went on to create more elaborate insects. With painstaking detail, Upton has honed his glass lampworking skills to create a vast array of bugs so realistic in detail, that even entomologists are impressed. He has since crafted ladybugs, katydids, beetle, dragonflies, praying mantis, and dozens of other insects both common and rare.

His inspiration comes from National Geographic, Entomology Texts, and his travels throughout Asia.

Can't make it to the demonstration? Toby's work is always on view and available for sale at Biddle Gallery.

Michael Goss: PortraitsApril 21-June 3, 2006
Artist Reception, Friday, April 21, 2006, 6:00-9:00PM

Michael Goss' work utilizes simplicity and subtlety to convey unorthodox emotions, images and ideas. The work is inspired by various styles of illustration, the creativity of young children, and the derivation of everyday life. Michael is pursuing further education and continues his creative endeavors.
Artist Statement:When I make art, I am often fully realizing the visual form of an incredibly simple idea. The maturation of my work is typically not a long process. It is important that when I have an idea, I begin shaping it immediately or the essence is lost. It is not my intention to tell a story with my work, I am more intrigued by expressing a single thought in a single period of time. Although over a decade, the reoccurring images and ideas in my work have begun to create a narrative. In 1997 I painted a portrait entitled 'Frustration' which would be the beginning of my folkloric narrative. From that point on I concentrated on illustrations and paintings that introduced an often comic book style cast of characters. The focus of most of this work has been on the human face, and all of the subtle variations that can so precisely portray the diverse array of emotions I wish to create.I have chosen to show my most current body of 'portraits' which I began after revisiting the same feelings and ideas I found years ago. 'Frustration' will be included in this collection, which has never before been shown in public.

This work may best represent the creative world which my ideas reside in, and also display the maturation of my work over a long, turbulent periodof my life.I am incredibly thrilled and honored to show this collection

.-Michael Goss

wyandotte art galleries

Here we go.

I believe art builds. Wyandotte Michigan is an up and coming arts community.
This is my first post to get us started. So I'll keep it short.

Go to River's Edge Gallery 3024 Biddle ave., walk north and above RP McMurphy's and you will find Izzo and Sims studio, keep going north and you will hit biddle gallery, you will want to stop at one of the coffee shops for a cupa.

This is only the beginning of Wyandotte's art revival.
